Centre for Advanced Study (CAS)

What is CAS?

The Centre for Advanced Study Sofia (CAS) is an independent non-profit institution set up for the promotion of advanced scholarship and academic cooperation. It provides financial and institutional support for post-doctoral research and for research programmes in the Humanities and the Social Sciences.

Context

The idea of creating a small "centre of academic excellence" in Sofia draws upon the traditions and the practices of the Institutes for Advanced Study in the US and Europe. CAS has also emerged in response to specific national and regional context-generated needs, especially those related with the drastically diminished influence of academia in the public sphere on a regional scale and the lack of intellectual agency to carry out authoritative critical self-reflection in the societies of the region.

Mission

The overall commitment of CAS is to generate and disseminate knowledge as well as improve standards of learning in the Social Sciences and the Humanities. By offering individual scholarships to prominent scholars from Bulgaria, Southeast Europe, and further abroad and by running autonomous group and regional projects, CAS aims to create institutional conditions conducive to independent research, intellectual creativity and dialogue on a national and regional scale.

Profile

By initiating and hosting regional research projects and inviting regional scholars, CAS aims to establish a viable intellectual network and promote practical academic collaboration between the countries of Southeast Europe. With the help of other advanced study institutes, universities, and academic and cultural associations in the region, CAS works to re-establish the tradition of intellectual communities and to facilitate critical and open debates on a national and trans-national level.
